Interlock is the one part of a property where the work you cannot see decides how long it lasts. The stone is the easy part. The base under it is what survives — or does not survive — an Ottawa winter, and when interlock sinks, dips or goes wavy it is almost never the stone that failed.
Re-levelling settled interlock
We lift the affected stone, correct and recompact the base to the depth the application actually needs, screed the bedding layer and relay the same material. Joints are refilled with polymeric sand to resist weeds and washout. It is a far cheaper job than replacement, and it fixes the cause rather than the appearance.
Repairs
Individual broken, sunken or lifted pavers replaced and blended into the surrounding stone. Settled driveway edges, patio corners and front steps brought back to level. Where a downspout or a bad grade is putting water under the same section every year, we will tell you — because relaying stone over the same drainage problem just books the job in again for three winters from now.
What we do not do
New installations, new layouts and design work. This service is repair and re-levelling of interlock that is already there. If you are planning a patio or driveway from scratch you want a landscape installer, and we would rather say so than take the job on and pass it to somebody else.
What our interlock repair & re-levelling service includes
- Sunken, dipped and wavy interlock lifted and put back level
- The base rebuilt and recompacted — the actual cause, not the appearance
- Your existing stone relaid, so you are not paying for new material
- Individual broken, lifted or sunken pavers replaced and blended in
- Settled patios, walkways, driveway edges and front steps corrected
- Polymeric sand jointing to resist weeds and washout
- Drainage and grading corrected so the same spot does not sink again
- Repairs and re-levelling only — we do not take on new installations

Interlock Repair & Re-levelling — your questions answered
No. We repair and re-level existing interlock — that is the whole of what we offer here. No new installations, no new layouts, no design work. If you want a patio or driveway built from scratch, you want a landscape installer rather than us, and we would rather tell you that up front than take the job and sub it out.
Nearly always the base rather than the stone. An under-compacted or too-shallow base settles, and water that cannot drain freezes and heaves it. The stones themselves are usually fine — re-levelling lifts them, rebuilds the base properly, and relays the same material.
Usually yes, and that is the point of the job. If the stone is in good condition, re-levelling reuses it and you only pay for base material, labour and jointing sand. We will tell you at the estimate if too many pieces are broken or worn for that to be worthwhile.
Often, yes. If the settlement is confined to one section and the rest of the base is sound, we lift and relay that area alone. Where the surrounding stone has faded differently the repair can show slightly, and we will point that out before we start rather than after.
Deeper than in milder climates, because of frost. Walkways and patios need a substantially compacted granular base, and driveways carrying vehicle loads need more again. Cutting the base short is the single most common reason interlock fails within a few winters, and it is invisible until it does — which is usually what we are being called out to correct.
Anywhere from spring through to late autumn while the ground is workable and unfrozen. The season books up, so if you want work done in a particular month it is worth getting the estimate in early.
